The Underrated Skill Every Lifter Needs
The mindset shift that makes strength sustainable
Let’s get straight to the point.
It’s not discipline.
It’s not grit.
It’s patience.
Last week I made a 190kg deadlift! Adding 15kg to my personal best from a year ago.
While I’m really proud of this achievement, it hasn’t come out of nowhere.
I first learnt to deadlift about 6 years ago. My approach to learning the deadlift was to throw my ego at the door because I didn’t want to injure myself.
I remember practising at 50kg, 60kg, and 80kg over and over again for the first few years, working on improving my hamstring flexibility and strengthening my core. Then, when I was confident enough to test my strength, I hit 100kg, and then I hit 120kg at a deadlift seminar. Then 140, and 165kg with my Olympic lifting coach. And then 175kg on my own last year.
I can teach someone how to deadlift in a single personal training session. But does that mean they “really know” how to deadlift? Probably not.
It’s like investing money. You can learn from books and podcasts how to invest your money into stocks, bonds, or perhaps even crypto, and you could apply what you have learnt straight away. But does that make you money straight away?
If it does, then you’re incredibly lucky!
For 99.9% of you, the answer is no.
Patience. You must be patient over decades to make a decent return from the stock market. You need to be patient when investing in a startup that you believe will do well, or to make a profit off your property.
The same goes for lifting. Invest your time focusing on your technique, and you will have rewarding dividends in years to come, both in strength and longevity.
