Hey everyone,
I recently completed my April fitness challenge: the Hillcrest 4x4x48, marking 1/4 of the way through this year's quest. This challenge was simple, yet by no means easy.
Designed by former Navy Seal, ultramarathoner runner, and former Guinness world record holder for the most amount of pull-ups in 24 hours, David Goggins, the 4x4x48 challenge is available to anyone and can be done anytime, anywhere.
4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 hours.
Let me do the maths for you.
12 runs totalling 77km across 2 days.
Yes, you are probably wondering how do you sleep?
That’s the trick. Each run of 4 miles (or 6.4km) is not too physically demanding. But every time you finish a run, the clock is ticking to get as much recovery in as possible before the next run.
Each run took me 35 - 45 minutes to complete. With the remaining time left, I ate, showered and recovered (and sometimes I worked, oops). Recovery meant I either slept for 2.5 hours, stretched, or used the sauna.
Hydration and nutrition are super critical for recovery. The volume of calories needed to be high, but the foods couldn’t be too complex or dense, so I could digest quickly. Water and salt levels needed to be high, and with many outfit changes.
Even if you get all the right, the constant getting up, run after run, is a new stress on the mind. It’s called discipline. To get out of bed for those night runs where it’s completely quiet outside except for foxes requires a certain kind of mindset to do that.
If the challenge wasn't already difficult enough, the first run began on a Friday at 8 pm, after a long day of work.
Overall, this challenge did not destroy me. Physically, my body did very well to adapt to the fatigue even after the first 12 hours of running. Mentally, this weekend helped me realise that I still have the fire in me to go after anything I want in life.
Life is not always going to be smooth or easy. Sometimes you will be tired, alone, sore, but by getting through to the other side without quitting, you become something else.

The 4x4x48 challenge is very fulfilling. I recommend this challenge to anyone who is looking for something new and is seeking to change something about themselves. You don’t need to sign up to any event, you just go out there and do it.
